Journal: Brown, S. L., Birch, D. A., & Kancherla, V. (2005). Bullying Perspectives: Experiences, Attitudes, and Recommendations of 9- to 13-Year-Olds
This article is about a study that 1,229 students visiting 11 health education centers in seven states. Responding anonymous to the questions, half of the students said that they have been bullied at least once in a while. However, 16% of kids do nothing when they see bullying happen. It is said to be that bullying is “uncool,” yet 42% of kids said they bully people occasionally. Victims who also bully often said that bullying occurs because others are not friendly to bullies or because bullies want to get their way. This article was beneficial to me in many ways. First, I feel as if this article was meant for students my age because of the language, which not only makes it easier to understand, but the article makes it more relatable to society. Because the author stated that three fourths of students believed bullying is “uncool,” I would think that students would not bully, but that is definitely not the case.
Journal: Cassidy, W., Brown, K., & Jackson, M. (2012). "Making Kind Cool": Parents' Suggestions for Preventing Cyber Bullying and Fostering Cyber
This article is all about specifically cyber bullying becoming a global phenomenon more and more in society. Facebook, blogs, chat rooms, Twitter, and all other social medias are popular websites where males and females start bullying each other over the computer screen. Little do people know that feelings are hurt so badly on the other side of the screen, yet the bully has no idea. This article was valuable to me because in my opinion, cyber bullying is one of the most popular bullying causes. I think there are more cyber bullies in the world than anything else because it is harder to make fun of somebody or say something to someone in person than on the computer. With this being said, people like to cyber bully other people because they cannot see the person’s face or reaction so therefore they enjoy what they are saying without harm.
This is a second article going over the main causes of bullying in the world. Researchers have found that kids who bully others often have average or even above average levels of self-esteem. Bullies often have good leadership skills, have an easy time making friends and therefore have a large friendship networks. Main causes of bullying in this article state that bullies have a strong need to be in control and exert their dominance, bullies are rewarded for their bullying behaviors, bullies lack empathy and may even get pleasure out of other people’s pain, bullies lack the ability to self-regulate emotions, and lastly, bullies are heavily influenced by their family backgrounds.
This article was useful to me because it lists all the main causes with an explanation after. All of the causes all make sense and seem to be so true and real. Bullies get satisfied from hurting one’s feelings because it makes them feel good. This article was helpful because it lists some of the motivations that drive bullying behaviors so people can answer the question of why do bullies bully.
Editorial: Wang, J., Iannotti, R., & Luk, J. (2012). Patterns of adolescent bullying behaviors: Physical, verbal, exclusion, rumor, and cyber. Journal Of School Psychology, 50(4), 521-534.
This article was about why people bullying others. Types of bullying are physical, verbal, exclusion, rumor and cyber. The article has different statistics for the gender that bullies more and for what specifically they bully other people. For example, 10.5% of bullies are boys and only 4% of bullies are girls. Bullying that is not involved is class happens with girls 66.6% of the time. However, this statistic decreases for the males to about 60.2%. Girls seem to cyber bully more often than males. In my opinion, I thought this article was very helpful. Statistics are very useful in articles because it really compares the population to the matter, for this case bullying. For instance, if the article were to say, “More females bully in society than males,” it would not be as real as to use statistics. Bullying is preventable, yet a very serious matter, in which it does explain it in this article.
This article was about the causes of bullying. People bullying others for many reasons. The article first started off that in a culture that is fascinated with winning, power and violence, experts suggest that it is unrealistic to expect people will not be influenced to seek power through violence in their own lives. Also, the article talked about how the fact that someone gets more social recognition for negative behaviors than for positive ones can contribute to bullying.
This article helped me out a lot during my project. Listing all the causes of bullying, there was an explanation after so it was very clear. I never realized how many causes there really are to bullying. I realized through this article that much of what causes bullying is that people either have a low self-esteem or they are jealous of someone else’s life.
